English Debate Contest는 영어교육과 3,4학년 학생들을 대상으로 2010년에 처음으로 개최되었습니다. English Debate Contest는 단순한 영어 말하기 능력 함양의 차원을 지나서, 영어교육과 학생들의 논리적 사고 능력을 향상시켜 글로벌 인재 역량을 고취하고자 하는 목적이 있습니다.
English Debate에 참여한 학생들은 총 45명, 12개 조가 참여하였으며 예선, 준준결승, 준결승, 결승 등 총 12번의 대전을 치루었습니다. 영어토론대회의 형식은 주제가 주어지면 각 주제에 대하여 찬성측(pro)과 반대측(con)으로 나누어서 서로 논쟁을 하도록 하고 3주간에 걸쳐 토너먼트 형식으로 결전이 이루어졌습니다. 각 조마다 3-4명의 학생들로 구성하여, Initiator, debator 1, debator 2, adjuster등으로 역할을 분담하여 토론을 진행하였는데, Initiator는 앞으로 각 조원의 역할 설명과 함께 주어진 주제에 대한 대략적인 모두발언, debator는 상대편의 주장에 대하여 논박하고 구체적인 증거나 예를 들어 자신이 속한 팀의 입장을 방어하는 역할, adjustor는 지금까지 나왔던 의견을 최종적으로 정리하는 역할을 수행하였습니다.
English Debate Contest의 채점자들은 동료학생들과 교수들로서 구성이 되었으며, 언어측면, 전달기술, 내용 및 구성, 상호작용 등 네 가지 영역에 걸쳐 점수가 부여되었습니다. 우승자는 김재희, 이유리, 황유선의 조가 우승하여 소정의 상금(10만원)과 상장이 수여되었습니다.
